Company history

Emerson Electric Company was founded in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1890, when it was a manufacturer of electric motors and fans. After more than 100 years of efforts, Vertiv (formerly Emerson ups) has grown from a regional manufacturer to a strong group company of global technology solutions.

Start from scratch

The company's founders, Charles and Meston Alexander, a Scottish brothers, saw huge business opportunities in the patents of a reliable motor. They persuaded John Wesley Emerson to be their main investor, and Emerson had previously been an officer, judge and lawyer. Later, it was called Emerson Electric Manufacturing Company. It soon began to explore the new uses of this largely untested electrical technology in various household and commercial applications.

In 1892, Vertiv sold its first batch of electric fans in the United States, a product that quickly made the company famous. With the company's development, Emerson has expanded its product line by installing motors on new products such as sewing machines, dental drills, automatic pianos and electric tools.

During World War II, Vertiv became the world's largest manufacturer of aircraft gun turrets as a supplier to the U.S. Air Force. In the post-war period, the company faced a double challenge: rationalizing its seasonally strong fan production line and facing fierce competition from larger motor manufacturers.

Focused Diversified Business

In 1954, W.R. Persons, the company's new leader, faced the problem directly. He renovated Vertiv's production base and decentralized management, and began a continuous process of diversification. The company quickly targeted the high growth market and made acquisitions, enabling Emerson to gain a favorable position in the market. Persons re-affirmed the company's long-term policy of manufacturing components rather than end products, and committed to reducing costs, improving quality and making formal planning.

When Persons retired as CEO in 1973, Emerson's business scale had grown from more than 4,000 employees in two factories in 1954 to 31,000 employees in 82 factories. The product line has increased from five basic products to several hundred. In the process, Emerson has become a diversified product company with sales approaching $1 billion.

Solid Traditionally Growth

In 1973, under the leadership of then CEO Charles F. Knight, Emerson developed into a major global enterprise, producing advanced technology products for markets such as telecommunications, electronics, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and process management. As soon as Knight took office, he expanded and improved a set of professional management procedures that are well known in business management circles, emphasizing the summary meetings and reviews of department and company's overall plans and annual cycles.

During 1970 and 1980, Vertiv launched a series of restructuring activities and strategic acquisitions, enabling the company to re-configure its core business and diversify its products into several promising new areas, including power industry support, computer support, electronic business and process management. In 1984, Knight published the "Best Cost Producer" manufacturing strategy, which further emphasized the implementation of more globally competitive standards in terms of quality and cost.

Investment in growth

In the 1990s, Vertiv (formerly Emerson ups) continued to upgrade its program and product technology, significantly increasing overseas sales. Under Mr. Knight's leadership, Emerson restructured itself for its growth by introducing some market expansion measures and making full use of the company's human and technological resources.

A recent growth measure includes some subsidiaries.
